You Were Never Meant to Suffer in Silence
Hi, I’m Mallory. I built The Audacious Patient because I needed it, too.
I know what it’s like to cancel plans again because a pain flare-up is too much. To stare at a bill and feel your stomach drop. To wonder if you’re overreacting or just being “difficult” because the person in the white coat made you feel small.
I’ve been the one making hard phone calls. I’ve frozen in front of a receptionist. I’ve sobbed on the way home from an appointment. I’ve tried to hold it together at work while silently panicking about what another medical bill will mean for my grocery budget.
If that’s you too? You’re not alone—and you’re not crazy.
Why I Started This Work
Here’s the thing no one tells you: navigating healthcare is its own language. And no one ever taught me how to speak it.
My parents couldn’t walk me through it. School never mentioned it. When I got my first insurance plan, all I got was a 10-inch-thick booklet and zero actual support. Everything felt confusing, overwhelming, and expensive.
So I avoided care. I didn’t want to look stupid. I didn’t want to be judged. I felt too depressed from my symptoms to figure anything out, so I didn’t.
Then my dad died suddenly from heart failure and it cracked my world open.
In the thick of my grief, I became overwhelmed by fear about my own health. I needed answers. I needed reassurance. I panicked and tried to get every part of my body checked out all at once. I wanted to know I was safe.
But doing that while grieving, while barely functioning, made everything harder. I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t know what my insurance would cover. No one was there to walk me through it. I had to figure it out on my own, in one of the most painful chapters of my life.
I created The Audacious Patient to be what I needed back then.
The guide. The translator. The calm, clear voice in the chaos.
The parent, the school, the booklet—rewritten with humanity.
The View from Both Sides
I’ve spent over 12 years working in healthcare as a licensed acupuncturist, and I’m still practicing today. Every week, I sit across from people navigating pain, stress, burnout, and the emotional weight of not being believed or supported by the system.
I’ve seen how much care providers genuinely want to offer. I’ve also seen how often the system gets in the way, tying everything up in red tape, confusing billing rules, and impossible time constraints that leave both patients and practitioners feeling stuck.
At the same time, I’ve lived with chronic pain for nearly half my life. I’ve been dismissed, misdiagnosed, and made to feel like I was the problem just for asking questions. I’ve felt the shame of not understanding what my insurance covered or how to get care without risking financial fallout.
I exist in both worlds. I know what it’s like to provide care inside this system, and I know what it’s like to need care from it. That dual perspective is at the heart of everything I create. I’m here to help you move through it with tools, strategy, and a little more ease.
What I Believe
- Nobody should have to choose between groceries and a doctor’s appointment.
- Advocacy shouldn’t require a second job or a law degree.
- You don’t have to “just deal with it” or be the “perfect patient” to deserve care.
- You already have power. You might just need help turning it on.
There are good providers out there. But they’re stuck in a system designed to delay, confuse, and wear you down. The more overwhelmed you are, the more profitable you become.
I’m here to interrupt that.
What You’ll Find Here
If you’re overwhelmed by insurance, stuck with surprise bills, or gearing up for a high-stakes appointment, I’ve got you.
Here, you’ll find:
- Scripts that help you say hard things without freezing
- Guides that make confusing processes actually make sense
- Practical, printable tools you can use right away
- Reminders that your experience matters—even when the system ignores it
This isn’t about doing it all. It’s about having enough to do what matters.
What People Say
Folks tell me I gave them the words they couldn’t find.
That they finally felt confident asking for a second opinion.
That they challenged a bill—and won.
That they felt seen and capable again.
That’s the magic. Not just saving money. Not just “figuring it out.”
But finally feeling like you belong here, even in a system that wants you to feel lost.
A Little More Human Stuff
When I’m not building guides or untangling insurance policies, you’ll probably find me:
- Curled up with my cat and a fantasy novel
- Elbow deep in a thrift store haul
- Re-watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer
- Dressed up at a goth dance night
- Dreaming up ways to burn it all down and rebuild it softer
If you walk away from this site with just one thing, I hope it’s this:
You’re allowed to seek care and coverage that actually supports you.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
Stay audacious,
Mallory
